CHAMPIONS RETAIN THEIR CROWN at “THE DORSET BOWLS RESORT”
Early in January, most of the winning Teams from 2014 assembled at “The Dorset Bowls Resort” for the fourth running of the popular Champion of Champions weekend. All the Teams were Champions in their own right, having already won a Tournament to qualify, so it came as no surprise that the standard of bowling was amazingly high, with almost every end a closely fought affair.
The Cove BC Rink – consisting of Ken & Carol Eichen and Jeanette & Alan Shelly - were the very worthy Winners, defending their Title in true Champion style. Teams came from all over England, including Rinks from Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Middlesex, Cornwall, Hampshire, Dorset and Somerset. (winning team pictured Below)
Played in a Round Robin format, the Winners of the Groups and the Runners-Up from two Groups, competed in the Play Offs to determine the top four Teams.
In Division A, the Round Robin was won by the defending Champions Cove BC from Hampshire, who just edged out Isleworth BC Rink from Middlesex. Almost all the Games in Division A were very exciting affairs and were all played in a competitive and very friendly atmosphere.
In Division B, the standard of bowling was equally high, with almost all the Games contested right to the very end. The eventual Winners – who won all their Round Robin Games – were Kensey Vale BC from Cornwall.
The Runners-Up spot in Division B was eventfully claimed by Severall Jubilee BC from Somerset, contesting the Play Off for the third year running!
Third/Fourth Play Off
Stephen Gibson’s Rink from Isleworth BC in Middlesex played very well and beat David Rees’ consistent Rink from Severall Jubilee BC in Crewkerne. The bowling standards continued to be of the highest quality and it took some excellent drawing Woods to eventually wear down Severall Jubilee to eventually clinch the 3rd Isleworth BC.
The Final was another high quality Game. All eight Players bowled some excellent Woods and it was true to say that, halfway through the Final, it was difficult to guess who was going to win. However, the Kensey Vale Team just went ‘off the boil’ at the last moment and the defending Champions from Hampshire went on to win over the last few Ends, producing some excellent drawing shots just when it really mattered.
At the Presentation, all the winning Teams were presented with their Prizes by Dorset Bowls Director – Bev Champion. Alan Shelly, in accepting their Trophy, thanked “The Dorset Bowls Resort” for another fantastic Tournament, exclaiming how well it was run and how much it had been enjoyed by the Competitors and Supporters alike and promised that Cove BC would return next year to defend their Trophy and try to win the Trophy for a third time!
